Overview
This visit to Community Development School (CDS) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia was a hands-on volunteering experience working directly with children and students of different ages. Activities ranged from music to English and math — bringing energy, learning, and laughter to the school community.
What We Did
Visited the school in Phnom Penh and connected with students, teachers, and staff throughout the day.
Brought a digital saxophone and played for the kids, introducing them to the instrument and sparking curiosity about music.
Guided the children step by step in how to hold and play the digital saxophone, then let them play together — a joyful and lively session full of energy and smiles.
Beyond teaching, the visit was simply about being present and sharing time with the kids — playing, laughing, and making genuine connections.
Ran English lessons for older students, focusing on conversation, vocabulary, and practical language use to support their studies and future opportunities.
Led math sessions for younger children, making numbers approachable and fun through interactive exercises and encouragement.
Reflections
The highlight of the day was the digital saxophone session. Watching the children's expressions shift from curiosity to delight as they discovered they could actually play music themselves was unforgettable. Music has a unique ability to break down barriers and bring people together — and that was clear from the moment the first note rang out.
Teaching English and math also reminded me how much enthusiasm students bring when learning feels personal and interactive. The older students were eager to practice conversation, and the younger kids tackled math with genuine effort and energy.
Spending time at CDS reinforced why this kind of direct, human connection matters. Tools and technology can extend reach, but nothing replaces simply showing up, being present, and sharing something real with people.
